Allegany County

County in northwest Maryland, USA; 1,090 sq km/421 sq mi; population (1990) 75,000. Cumberland serves as its administrative headquarters. The area is bounded north by Pennsylvania and south by the Potomac River. It is situated in the Appalachian Mountains, with the Allegheny Mountains lying to the west. The county includes Cumberland Narrows and Green Ridge State Forest. Industries include coal mining, limestone and clay extraction, lumbering, agriculture, and some manufacturing at Cumberland.

Its south section has long been an oil and natural gas producing region; there is also some manufacturing. Local farms produce vegetables, fruit, maple syrup, and poultry.
