Allegheny County

County in southwest Pennsylvania, USA; area 1,883 sq km/727 sq mi; population (1990) 1,336,400. Its administrative headquarters is Pittsburgh. Allegheny County is in the heart of a rich coal mining and steel producing area. Corporate headquarters, research and development facilities, and heavy industry are concentrated in Pittsburgh, and there is substantial suburban development.
