Allen, Horatio

Allen, Horatio (1802–1890)

US civil engineer. He made the first railway trip in America, operating the Stourbridge Lion 1829 at Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He was chief engineer of the South Carolina railway and later the Erie railway, of which he was also president. He was consulting engineer to the Panama railway and president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
