Allen, Lough

Allen, Lough

Lake in County Leitrim, Republic of Ireland, on the upper course of the River Shannon. It is 11 km/7 mi long and 5 km/3 mi wide.

The lough is surrounded by mountains, of which Slieve Anierin (586 m/1,922 ft) is the highest. On Inismagrath Island are the remains of a church reputedly founded by St Beoy. The area surrounding Lough Allen has some reserves of coal and iron ores.

Drumshanbo, a small town on the southern shores of the lake, is an angling resort and also hosts An Tostal, an annual Irish music festival.
