Allen, Thomas (1944– )

English baritone. He made his opera debut in 1969, with the Welsh National Opera. He appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1971, and at Glyndebourne from 1973. He was noted as Papageno, Pelléas, and Don Giovanni, and also as a concert singer. In 1985 he sang Ulysses in the first performance at Salzburg of Monteverdi's Il ritorno di Ulisse, arranged by Henze. At the London Coliseum in 1986 he was Faust in the first British stage performance of Busoni's opera. He sang Mozart's Count at Los Angeles in 1990, and at Salzburg in 1994, and the Forester and Beckmesser in new productions of The Cunning Little Vixen and Die Meistersinger at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
