Allen, Steve

Allen, Steve (1921–2000)

US comedian, author, and songwriter. He was a pioneer of US television entertainment with his creation of The Tonight Show (1953–).

Born into entertainment, Allen was the son of a New York vaudeville duo. He started his career as a radio actor in Chicago, Illinois, and then worked as a radio announcer in Phoenix, Arizona, a comedian for the Columbia Broadcasting System in Hollywood, California, and the host of his own Steve Allen Show. He served as the host of The Tonight Show 1953–57. Allen also wrote lyrics for over 3,000 songs.
