Allier

River in central France, rising in the Margeride Mountains in the département of Lozère and flowing northwest to join the Loire 6 km/3.7 mi west of Nevers; length 410 km/254 mi. The river gives its name to the département of Allier. Vichy and Moulins are the main towns on the river, which forms the boundary between the départements of Cher and Nièvre.

Allier

Département in the Auvergne region of central France, located to the north of the Massif Central; area 7,340 sq km/2,835 sq mi; population (1999 est) 344,700. The principal rivers are the Allier, the Cher, and the Loire (which forms the eastern boundary of the département). The Sologne heathland has been reclaimed, and is used for raising livestock. Allier is primarily agricultural, though manufactured goods produced here include cutlery, glass, and textiles. The departmental capital is Moulins; other important urban centres are the spa town of Vichy, Montluçon, and Lapalisse.

Allier was created from the former province of Bourbonnais.
