Alliston

Town in Simcoe County, south Ontario, Canada; combined population with Beeton, Tecumseth, and Tottenham (1991) 20,200. It is situated 64 km/40 mi northwest of Toronto, on the Boyne River. Frederick Banting, codiscoverer of insulin, was born in 1891 in what was then an agricultural community. Today a Honda auto plant is the major employer, and potatoes are the major crop.
