alloxan

C4H2O4N2, an important decomposition product of uric acid. It is obtained by oxidizing uric acid with nitric acid. On treatment with alkali, it takes up two molecules of water, producing urea and mesoxalic acid. It is used in medical research to produce experimental diabetes, since it selectively destroys the cells of the pancreas that secrete insulin.
