allyl

In chemistry, the propenyl group, an unsaturated organic radical corresponding to the formula CH2:CHCH2.

The chief compounds are allyl alcohol (propenol), with the general properties of a primary alcohol; allyl iodide, a colourless liquid with an odour of garlic; allyl bromide, a heavy liquid obtained by treating allyl alcohol with phosphorus tribromide; allyl sulphide, or ‘oil of garlic’, obtained by macerating garlic; and allyl isothiocyanate, or ‘oil of mustard’, occurring in black mustard seeds.
