Almagro, Diego de

Almagro, Diego de (1475–1538)

Spanish soldier who partnered Francisco Pizarro in the conquest of Peru. Almagro arrived in Panama 1514 with the expedition of Pedro Arias de Ávila. Almagro recruited followers and arranged shipments for the expeditions led by Pizarro 1524–28. He led an expedition of conquest to Chile 1535–36, and returned to break the siege of Cuzco, taking its governorship.

He was assassinated by Pizarro's brother Hernando 1538, and his supporters killed Francisco Pizarro three years later.
