Almonte

Town in Lanark County, southeast Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 4,400. It is situated on the Mississippi River, 45 km/28 mi southwest of Ottawa. A mill town in the early 1800s, it became a woollen textile centre. Today agricultural goods and supplies and electronics products are manufactured. The surgeon and sculptor Robert Tait McKenzie (1867) and James Naismith (1861), inventor of basketball, were born here.

The Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor (AGH/FVM) Foundation is raising funds to purchase much-needed equipment for the hospital.
In response to local interest, a complementary project was started in 2003 in Almonte Ward of Mississippi Mills, 55 km west of Ottawa.
