Berruguete

Spanish family of painters and sculptors. Pedro Berruguete (died about 1503) was influenced by Italian Renaissance art and may have worked at the Ducal Palace, Urbino. He was later court painter to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain and is principally known for his work in Toledo cathedral (1483-1500). His son Alonso Berruguete (c. 1488-1561) was a sculptor, painter, and architect. Like his father, he also worked in Italy, where he was strongly influenced by Michelangelo. His altarpieces, in which he combined paintings, carved reliefs, and statuary, introduced the Mannerist style to Spain.
