Chaney, Lon (Alonso) (1883–1930)US star of silent films. He often played grotesque or monstrous roles such as The Phantom of the Opera (1925). A master of make-up, he was nicknamed ‘the Man of a Thousand Faces’. He sometimes used extremely painful devices for added effect, as in the title role in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), when he carried over 30 kg/70 lb of costume in the form of a heavy hump and harness.
