Alpes-Maritimes

Département in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France; area 4,292 sq km/1,657 sq mi; population (2000 est) 1,048,100. The main river is the Var. There are many mineral springs in the region. Tourism is the main activity, with resorts on the coast, the Côte d'Azur, including Nice (the administrative centre), Antibes, Menton, and Cannes. Flowers, fruit, and vegetables are grown and there are olive oil, perfume, and metal industries. On the coast there is fishing for tuna and sardines.

Bordered on the east and northeast by Italy, its southern coastline is on the Ligurian Sea. Alpes-Maritimes surrounds the principality of Monaco. The northern boundary is formed by the Maritime Alps, from which several mountain spurs run south. The main towns are Nice and Grasse.

Alpes-Maritimes receives almost 8 million visitors a year and two-fifths of the workforce is employed in the tourist industry.

The département is formed from the old county of Nice and part of Provence.
