Fomalhaut

Brightest star in the southern constellation Piscis Austrinus and the 18th-brightest star in the night sky. It is 25 light years from the Sun, with a true luminosity 13 times that of the Sun.

Fomalhaut is one of a number of stars around which IRAS (the Infra-Red Astronomy Satellite) detected excess infrared radiation. This comes from a region of solid particles around the star that has now been imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope. This material may be a planetary system in the process of formation.

It was one of the four royal stars of ancient Persia marking the approximate positions of the Sun at the equinoxes and solstices as they were at that date; the other three were Aldebaran, Regulus, and Antares.
