alpha

In computing, the first version of a new software program. Developing modern software requires much testing and many versions before the definitive product is achieved. The first versions of any new product are typically full of bugs, and are tested by the developers and their assistants. Later versions, known as beta versions, are given to outside users to test.

In an upcoming Physical Review Letters, Taleyarkhan's team presents evidence of fusion in bubbles initiated by a uranium-based trigger that emits alpha particles instead of neutrons.
A solid neutron converter material of boron is placed on the aluminum drift electrode producing alpha particles that ionize the fill gas mixture of argon and methane.
Because of differences in patterns of energy deposition in tissues, alpha particles and neutrons are biologically more effective than gamma rays per unit absorbed dose.
