alpha decay

Spontaneous alteration of the nucleus of a radioactive atom, which transmutes the atom from one atomic number to another through the emission of a helium nucleus (known as an alpha particle). As a result, the atomic number decreases by two and the atomic weight decreases by four. See also radioactivity.
