The first picture of the Moon by a US spacecraft, taken by Ranger 7 on 31 July 1964. The large crater centre right is the 108-km/67-mi diameter Alphonsus, with Ptolemaeus above and Arzachel below. The plain is Mare Nubium.

Walled plain, 110 km/70 mi in diameter, a little south of the centre of the Moon's disc.

The Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kozyrev speculated in 1958 that the central peak of Alphonsus was the site of a recent volcanic eruption, which he had observed spectroscopically, but his interpretation has been disputed.
