alphorn

Wind instrument consisting of a straight, usually wooden tube terminating in a conical endpiece with an upturned bell, sometimes up to 4 m/12 ft in length. It is used to summon cattle and serenade tourists in the highlands of central Europe.

The wood is split lengthways and hollowed out, then reunited and covered with bark or split cane to seal against leakage. In some areas the alphorn is made of metal.
