Alpine Club

Society formed in 1857 to promote mountaineering, not only in the Alps, but throughout the world. It has been followed by many similar clubs in various countries.

It laid the foundations of Alpine literature in 1859 with the publication of Peaks, Passes and Glaciers, under the editorship of John Ball. In 1863 it began to publish the Alpine Journal, which gives accounts of climbs and explorations by members of the club and now has an international reputation. In consort with the Royal Geographical Society the Alpine Club has sponsored numerous Everest expeditions since the 1920s.

Bob McConnell, vice president of the American Alpine Club, agrees.
