Alpine

Town and administrative headquarters of Brewster County, west Texas, USA; population (2000) 5,800. It is situated 306 km/190 mi southeast of El Paso, between the Glass and Davis mountains, and is in the largest Texas county; Brewster County is larger in area than the state of Connecticut. The town was founded in 1882 with the arrival of the railway; it became a cattle and sheep raising centre, and developed later into a resort, with the nearby ‘Texas Alps’, Big Bend region, ghost towns, and dude ranches serving as popular attractions. It remains a trade centre, with some light manufactures. It is home to Sul Ross State University (1917).
