Alpinia

Subtropical genus of plants with about 250 species, in the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family, found in southern and eastern Asia and Polynesia. A. officinarum of China yields galangal, used in place of ginger.

Tokyo, Japan, Oct 24, 2005 - (JCNN) - NOEVIR has discovered a unique property of alpinia zerumbet (shell ginger), a kind of herbal plant from the Amami Islands, Kagoshima.
This newly discovered synchronized gender swap in nine species of the genus Alpinia reduces the risk of inbreeding, say Qing-Jun Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Mengla and his colleagues.
