Als

Danish island in Little Belt, Baltic Sea, off the coast of Slesvig; area 310 sq km/120 sq mi. The island, about 30 km/19 mi long and 5–20 km/3–12 mi wide, is part of the county of Sønderborg. Since 1930 it has been connected with mainland Denmark by a bridge across Als Sound. A number of engineering and systems-engineering companies are located here. Sønderborg is the principal town.

Ceded to Germany in 1864 when Prussia seized Schleswig-Holstein, this originally Danish island was restored to Denmark in 1920.
