Als| Danish island in Little Belt, Baltic Sea, off the coast of Slesvig; area 310 sq km/120 sq mi. The island, about 30 km/19 mi long and 5–20 km/3–12 mi wide, is part of the county of Sønderborg. Since 1930 it has been connected with mainland Denmark by a bridge across Als Sound. A number of engineering and systems-engineering companies are located here. Sønderborg is the principal town. |

| It is said to have been drawn, several years before the present anti-slavery agitation began, by a north- ern Methodist preacher, who, while residing at the south, had an opportunity to see slaveholding mor- als, manners, and piety, with his own eyes.
