Cyathea

Genus of about 600 tropical and subtropical tree ferns in the family Cyatheaceae, members of which may reach 15 m/50 ft in height. The common tree fern C. arborea is a native of tropical America and the West Indies; C. medullaris and C. dealbata both grow in New Zealand, and contain a starchy matter once used as food.

The stems characteristically show leaf scars and leaf bases and have a crown of large fronds. Older stems may be covered by masses of entangled roots that give anchorage and support.

The first is the March moth, Alsophila aescularia that, as you might have guessed by its common name, can emerge from January to April and the wingless female lays distinct bands of eggs around the stems.
