Alston

Market town in Cumbria, England, 35 km/22 mi southeast of Carlisle; population (2001) 2,200. It is the highest market town in England at 310 m/1017 ft above sea level. Alston was formerly a mining centre for lead, zinc, and coal.

Church Gates House dates from 1681, and the Quaker Meeting House from 1732–59. The town is set in moorland scenery and is surrounded by the highest mountains in the Pennine chain. The Pennine Way passes to the west of the town.
