Genus of fleshy-rooted South American plants, of the Amaryllidaceae (daffodil) family, with about 50 species. A. aurantica and A. ligtu are grown in gardens for their flowers. The leaves twist at the base so that the upper and lower surfaces are reversed and internally the anatomy has adapted to this reversed position.
