Altan

Irish traditional music band. Developed by the husband-and-wife team Frankie Kennedy (1955–1994; flute) and Máireád Ní Mhaonaigh (1959– ; fiddle and vocals), Altan are one of the few contemporary bands to be adopted by a mainstream record company, Virgin Records, whilst remaining in the mould of the traditional music ensemble. Their music is rooted in Máireád's local fiddle and song tradition of Gweedore, west Donegal, in the Republic of Ireland.

The line-up includes Máireád Ní Mhaonaigh, Ciarán Tourish (fiddle), Ciarán Curran (bouzouki), Dermot Byrne (accordion, who replaced Frankie Kennedy), and Mark Kelly (guitar). Important recordings include Island Angel (1993), Runaway Sunday (1997), and The Blue Idol (2002).
