Altman, Benjamin (1840-1913)

US businessman and art collector. Founder of B Altman & Company (1906), which became one of the country's most stylish department stores, he was a collector of paintings and sculptures. He bequeathed his collection to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and a legacy to the US National Academy of Design.
