Alto Paraná

Department in southeast Paraguay, bordered to the east by Argentina and Brazil along the River Paraná; area 13,498 sq km/5,212 sq mi; population (1992) 403,900. The capital is Puerto Presidente Stroessner. This is a high, densely forested region, traversed by many rivers with waterfalls and rapids. Because of its fertile soils, rich vegetation, and hydroelectric potential, Alto Paraná is one of Paraguay's most agriculturally-productive departments. The Itapiú hydroelectric plant is one of the largest, with an output of 12.6 GW. Several dams have been built on the River Paraná.
