Altrincham

Town in Greater Manchester, England; population (2001) 10,800. It is situated 15 km/9 mi from the centre of Manchester, and was originally a market town; only a remnant of its former market gardens now survives. The town centre is one of the major outlying shopping areas for the Greater Manchester area.

Altrincham developed as a suburban centre after the railway line was built in 1849. Industries, notably engineering and clothing manufacture, developed later, many of them located beside the Bridgewater Canal.

Dunham Massey Hall, built in the 18th century and former home of the earls of Stamford, is now owned by the National Trust; it opened to the public in 1982.
