Altus

Town and administrative headquarters of Jackson County, southwest Oklahoma, USA; population (1990) 21,900. It is situated 83 km/52 mi west of Lawton. Surrounded by an irrigation region, Altus processes and distributes cotton, cottonseed, alfalfa seed, wheat, and cattle. Altus Air Force Base to the northeast, is a major training facility, and an important local employer. The town is home to Western Oklahoma State College (1926).

Altus was founded after an 1891 flood sent the residents of the town of Fraiser to higher ground; hence the city's name, from the Latin for ‘high place’.
