Alva, Luigi (Luis) (1927– )

Peruvian tenor. He began his career with Radio Lima and in 1953 went to Italy, singing at La Scala in 1954. He specialized in operatic lyric roles, and sang at most of the great opera-houses and festivals. He appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1960, and made his New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1964, as Fenton. Other roles included Alfredo, Almaviva, and Ferrando. He retired from singing in 1989.
