Alvarado, Juan Bautista (1809–1882)

Californian insurgent who defeated the forces of the ruling Mexican government in California in the decisive battle of San Buenaventura 1836. From 1836 to 1838 he used the revolutionary title of ‘governor’, and from 1838 to 1842 was officially recognized by the Mexican government.
