Alvarez de Cienfuegos, Nicasio (1764–1809)

Spanish playwright and poet. Of his tragedies the best known are La Condesa de Castilla/The Countess of Castile 1815 and Pítaco 1822, both of which were posthumously published.

Born in Madrid, Alvarez was founder and editor of the journals Gaceta de Madrid and Mercurio from 1798; author of Poesías 1798. He publicly opposed Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808, was denounced to Murat, reprieved, but taken to France as a hostage, where he died.
