Alvaro, Corrado (1895–1956)

Italian novelist. His chief novel, Gente in Aspromonte/Revolt in Aspromonte (1930; translated 1962), and his collection of short stories Settantacinque racconti/Seventy-five Tales (1955) focus on the reality as well as the myths of his home region, Calabria.

He was born at San Luca and worked as a journalist for Corriere della Sera 1916–21 and 1922–26, and as foreign correspondent for La Stampa. He also wrote for the very active anti-fascist weekly Il mondo which was suppressed 1921–26. He wrote L'uomo è forte/Man Is Strong (1938; translated 1948), a novel based on a visit he made to Russia.
