Älvsborg

County of southwest Sweden, between Lake Vänern and the Skagerrak arm of the North Sea; area 12,742 sq km/4,920 sq mi; population (1995 est) 159,000. The region has poor soils and is largely forested. Industry is concentrated around Borås, supplied by hydroelectric power from the Göta River. Its capital is Vånersborg.
