Delta Amacuro

Federal territory in northeast Venezuela, containing the many mouths of the River Orinoco; area 40,200 sq km/15,521 sq mi; population (1996) 114,390. The chief town is Tucupita. The exploitation of oil and bauxite deposits has helped to open up this formerly remote region.
