Amambay

Department in east-central Paraguay, bordered to the east along the Sierra Amambaí and to the north along the River Apa by Brazil; area 12,933 sq km/4,993 sq mi; population (1992) 97,200. The capital is Pedro Juan Caballero. Amambay has a humid, sub-tropical climate. In the north of the department is the Cerro Cora National Park. The regional economy is based on the production of sugar cane, cotton, soybeans, corn, wheat, tobacco, cassava (tapioca), fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and timber.
