Amapala

Fishing village in southern Honduras, situated on Tigre Island in the Gulf of Fonseca about 32 km/20 mi from the mainland; population (1996) 10,000. It was once Honduras' main Pacific port before the port was moved to the mainland at San Lorenzo. Amapala was the capital of Honduras for a short time in 1876.

Tigre Island, on which Amapala is situated, is an inactive volcanic island that reaches 783 m/2,569 ft high.
