Amaryllidaceae

Family of monocotyledonous plants which differ from the Liliaceae in having an inferior ovary. There are about 90 genera and 1,000 species, chiefly tropical and subtropical. Various species of the genus Agave yield valuable fibres, for example, sisal hemp. The bulbs of some species have medicinal properties and others, such as Buphane disticha, are toxic.
