Amba Alagi

Mountain in Ethiopia where during World War II the occupying Italian forces under the Duke of Aosta made a last stand against the British-led invasion in May 1941.

It was defended by 7,000 Italian troops with 40 guns against a mixed force of British, Indian, South African, and Abyssinian troops. The battle took place at altitudes of 3,000 m/10,000 ft and more, lasting from 3 May until the Duke's force surrendered on 19 May.
