ambulance

Vehicle used to transport the injured to hospital, found in civilian life and in warfare. Most ambulance crews are trained in emergency first aid. The first large-scale organized use of ambulances was during the Crimean War 1853–56.

The Geneva Convention (1864) secured neutral protection for patients and ambulance staff in time of war.
