Ambonese Christians were favoured during the colonial period, while
Muslims were marginalized.
Dieter Bartels argues that the Ambonese responded to Europeans by
absorbing elements of the newcomers' beliefs thought to confer
access to sources of power previously unknown, eventually syncretising
them into a system in which traditional elements were preserved. As a field manual for south-central
Seram fauna, its systematic presentation of Nuaulu and of Linnaean
categories gives area researchers a headstart in developing their own
work along these lines, although it might have been more useful with the
addition of Ambonese Malay terms along with the Nuaulu and Linnaean
nomenclatures. |
