Ambrosiana Bibliotheca

Library in Milan, Italy, opened in 1609. The first public library in Italy, it was founded by the bishop of Milan, Cardinal Federico Borromeo (1564–1631). Housed in the palace built by Borromeo 1603–1609, it began with a collection of over 30,000 books and 12,000 manuscripts and was enriched by many private donations and bequests.

It was named after St Ambrose, patron saint of Milan.
