Amelia County

County in south-central Virginia, USA; area 925 sq km/357 sq mi; population (1990) 8,800. Its administrative headquarters is Amelia Courthouse. Situated in an area of rolling hills, it is rural, with no large towns. Sailor's (or Sayler's) Creek Battlefield, in its southwest corner, is the site of an American Civil War battle (6 April 1865) that immediately preceded the Confederate surrender at Appomattox, 53 km/33 mi to the west.
