Amendment, Seventeenth

Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1913, specifying that senators are to be chosen by the voters, rather than by state legislatures.

Senators were previously chosen by state legislatures, but the selection system had been tainted by bribery and corruption. The Seventeenth Amendment made the system for electing senators more democratic.

The Seventeenth Amendment also specifies the basic structure of the Senate: two senators from each state, who serve six-year terms, with each senator having one vote.
