American Fork

Town in Utah County, north-central Utah, USA; population (1990) 15,700. It is situated 45 km/28 mi south of Salt Lake City, on the American Fork River, to the north of Utah Lake. A trade centre for an area that produces sugar beets and poultry, the town is also a tourist base and headquarters for Timpanogos Cave National Monument, which is 11 km/7 mi to the east of the city. American Fork Canyon, between the town and Timpanogos Mountain, has been an important mining district. American Fork was a fur trapping centre before the start of more extensive settlement in 1850.
