sparrow hawk

Small woodland hawk Accipiter nisus, of the family Falconidae, order Falconiformes, found in Eurasia and North Africa. It is bluish-grey, with brown and white markings, and has a long tail and short wings. The male grows to 28 cm/11 in long, and the female to 38 cm/15 in. It hunts small birds and mice.

The center's feathered occupants - two red-tailed hawks, two horned owls, one barn owl and one American kestrel - are receiving visitors, but at a long wing's-length to protect the birds.
By swabbing the oral cavity, we documented that most birds shed WNV in oral exudates (11 [85%] of 13 species; 29 [69%] of 42 individuals birds); the highest titers were observed in Great Homed Owl, American Crow, and American Kestrel (Table 7).
``We have several birds of prey - a red-tailed hawk, a great horned owl, a screech owl and an American kestrel, which is a type of falcon - and a variety of snakes - rattlesnakes, gopher and king snakes and a desert hairy scorpion,'' said Joe Lennox, a recreational services leader.
