Americus

Americus

Town and administrative headquarters of Sumter County, southwest Georgia USA; population (2000) 17,000. It is situated on Muckalee Creek, 76 km/47 mi southeast of Columbus. Founded in 1832, it is a trade and processing centre for regional livestock, timber, and agricultural products. Kaolin and bauxite are mined nearby. Other industries include shirtmaking and mobile home construction.

Americus has many associations with President Jimmy Carter, who was born in nearby Plains; Georgia Southwestern College (1906) is home to the Carter Library, and the volunteer organization Habitat for Humanity was founded here in 1976.
